Roy C. Live on TikTok

Roy C. Hammond left this earth on September 16th, 2020, but his music will live forever. I never got to say a proper goodbye. I have a lot of regrets about not finishing the film for Roy in time. The younger, more naivé, version of my self wanted the film to be larger than life, like Roy C. On the bright side, we did capture a ton of incredible moments together and I look forward to sharing these moments on TikTok and YouTube. By releasing them freely, Roy's spirit will travel farther and shine brighter without the use of a paywall. Roy never liked walls anyway.

While You Wait...

Since I started working on Roy C. Forever, I have started many more projects. It's good to stay busy because you never know what obstacles are going to get in the way of finishing a film. I am pleased to say that Ryan Walker and I have finished a feature documentary simply called, Zielinski. It will make its World Premiere at Slamdance Film Festival in January. We combined forces with our buddy Paul Pollmann in Amsterdam. You know? the guy that did the incredible graphics and text for the live album! When Roy C. came to Columbia, Missouri in 2008, Ryan and I had already been working on Zielinski for over a year. John Zielinsk was 68 years old at the time and knew how much work was going into getting Roy C. here and to get the live show off the ground. John's film took a backseat. We invited him to the big Roy C. Show in downtown Columbia and he said, "Yes, I'll be there. Now where is it." We were delighted to see John in the front row, up against the fence enjoying the show. He listened closely to Roy's lyrics. I know this because after the show I asked him, "What'd you think, John?" He replied,"He's a lot like me." He's right. I'd never noticed the similarities. It really made me ask the question "Do I pick my films? or Do they pick me?"
As we were breaking down equipment, we saw John walking away. When he came to the access channel the next week, we asked him if he'd done anything fun after the show. He did not. He walked 6 miles back to his trailer. In order to see the show, he had to miss the last bus to his place. I'll never forget that.

Zielinski Synopsis
By 1983 John Zielinski was a well-known author and photographer. His work had appeared in Life Magazine, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and countless other publications. But in a devastating 1984 contract dispute, he lost $50,000 and his professional credibility. “This was the opening shot - turning me back into an investigative reporter.”

I'm still editing away on the live DVD. It will be a combination of footage from the Roots N' Blues performance, and some interview footage of Roy that I have collected over the years. Roy C. Live CD

I have placed the order for Roy C's first live album. The sound quality is going to be incredible. Paul Pollmann www.studiopollmann.nl created the layout for the CD and all the graphic work. LG Patterson took all the photos and Wil Reeves recorded, mixed, and mastered the thing.

WTF ROD?

Rod Stewart covers Roy C's "Shotgun Wedding" in 1993. I can't believe this.

We Did It!

After 5 months of band rehearsal and preparation for the big shoot, we completed the ending to Roy C. Forever. We had a 3 piece horn section, a B2 organ, drums, bass, guitar and Roy C. On opening night of the Roots N' Blues N' BBQ Festival Roy C. and his band of two days played in front of around 10,000 people. It was a beautiful night in Columbia, Missouri when Roy took the stage. The crowd was all twitter-pated after seeing The Record Collector beforehand, and there was electricity in the air.
Roy played songs that he hadn't played in 35 years he told me. (Somebody Else's Woman, From the Outside Looking In, and Impeach the President). You would not have guessed that he was 69 years old the way he stomped around like a bull.
At one point during Peeping Through the Window the crowd started chanting ROY C! ROY C! When Roy sang "My Thing is Too Short!" the crowd went dead silent. I mean you could have heard a beer drop in that crowd of thousands. Then when he came back with the chorus Peeping Through the Window, Peeping Through the Blinds the crowd erupted in laughter and he had them in the palm of his hand. It was a good scene, man!
I wish you could have all been there and I'm sure some of you were. We were able to capture the audio and the video from 8 angles so there will be a LIVE album and DVD in the near future.
It was sad to see Roy go, but he left his mark on Columbia, and we hope to have him back. Thanks Roy.

Roots N' Blues N' BBQ

The culminating moment of "Roy C. Forever" will take place Friday, October 3rd in Columbia, Missouri.
Roy C will be traveling to the middle of Missouri where he will play the Roots N' Blues N' BBQ Festival. It is a free concert and it is expected to bring in over 100,000 people this year. Roy will be playing at the 8th and Cherry St. stage opening night (Friday, OCT 3rd @ 9PM) with a full band. The band will consist of local greats that are eager to show off their talents. We will have trumpet, sax, organ, guitars, bass, drums and... ROY C! We will be filming this as the last shoot for Roy C. Forever and recording the audio for Roy's first LIVE album. Daryle Bascom will be adding to visual splendor with his Videology. Columbia is honored to host such a dynamic Soul legend, but I have a feeling they won't know what hit em'. Best Weekend Ever! (Back from Pomonkey)

Roy C's 50th Anniversary of live performances was probably the best party I have ever been to. Donnie Ray put it down, Lee Fields put it down, and I don't have to tell you that Roy C. put it down!.... Twice! Ryan Walker took off on this journey with me to run a camera. We flew into Baltimore and drove to Pomonkey, MD. The next day was the big show. There was a crowd of more then 2000 people of all ages at Lamont's to pay tribute to the legend Roy C. The fans of Roy C. are the most dedicated fans I have ever seen. Most of them have been fans of Roy's for over 20 years and love ALL of his songs. Roy played a 1 hour set outside and then a 50 minute set inside Lamont's club. It was a scene man! That place was packed son! We had the best time drinking with all the fans after the show and I'm sure I still owe a few of you drinks. Thank you for the best time of my life.

On the Road Again

I am getting ready to take off this Friday to film Roy C. performing live in Pomonkey, Maryland. There is rumor that Don Covay will be there and if that is true, I just don't know what to do with my self. This show is a tribute to Roy C. for playing live music for 50 years. We visited Roy late June 2007 for 2 days. We learned a lot about Roy, how he has supported himself through his music for over 50 years, the benefits of Cod Liver Oil and more. Red Kelly (a true Soul Detective) was kind enough to visit us as we stayed in Allendale's Executive Inn. I heard some amazing soul music from him. Be sure to visit his blog http://www.souldetective.blogspot.com. Also be sure to listen to some of the J.Hines tunes he has on there. He played guitar on a lot of Roy's albums. J. Hines deserves a film about himself just the same. But for now we will focus on Roy C. Keep checking back for more information on the film.

Return from Allendale

We just returned from Allendale SC. Our mission.... return with footage of Roy C. Hammond. Mission Accomplished! We stayed at the Executive Inn in Allendale and hung out with Roy for two days at his store (Carolina Record Distribution) and at his home. It was the best time I ever had. The people of Allendale were so kind and served us up a fat portion of Southern hospitality. I will begin editing asap and hope to have "Roy C. Forever" finished by November. Keep checking back on this blog for updates on production, video, pictures, and information on the film.
